About Us

Our story

Forestry isn't all on-the-ground

Working as a woodland manager for both large estates and smaller clients in the 2010s, Joseph Weaver found that woodland owners didn't just need help with the practical aspects of woodland work, but also the ‘thinking’ side of things. That is, deciding on objectives – what the owner wants to get out of their woodland – and planning how to achieve them. Frequently, he was also asked to fill out the necessary paperwork – felling licences applications, Forestry Commission management plans etc.

Comprehensive Woodland Management thus developed to help woodland owners get the most out of their sites – be it safe enjoyment, increased biodiversity or revenue from forest products – with the peace of mind that they are satisfying legal requirements and doing things in accordance with best practice.

On hand to help

Comprehensive Woodland Management is run by Joseph and Caroline Weaver, who both hold MSc degrees in Forestry. We work primarily in the Wye Valley and lower Severn area, covering Gloucestershire, Bristol and Somerset, south-east Wales (Monmouth/Usk/Brecon) and Herefordshire. Our specialism is in managing existing broadleaf woodlands for biodiversity and recreation, but we can also advise on producing small-scale, sustainable products for revenue; available grants and policies; woodland creation and tree health.

We are pleased to share our know-how with landowners. Whether you've just bought a woodland and need help deciding what works to undertake, or you have owned your woodland for many years but would welcome help applying for felling licences and grants, we will tailor our services to suit your needs.

Who we work with

Our clients include woodland owners with a just few acres who want to improve their sites and produce coppice and timber products, and larger sites with SSSIs, Scheduled Ancient Monuments, public rights of way and other designations which need tailored management plans to satisfy legal requirements and ensure works contribute positively towards environment and biodiversity enhancement.

With the latter in mind, Joseph Weaver also started up a contracting company specialising in sensitive, low-impact forestry. Wye Coppice CIC works in the Wye Valley, Monmouthshire, Gloucestershire and beyond, on jobs that require a team with an ecologically sound ethos and the skills to fell and extract while minimising negative impacts. Having this team to call on brings benefits for our clients.

As well as the specialist knowledge that comes from years of experience in the field, CWM has built up useful relationships with relevant bodies and stakeholders. By using CWM as an agent, woodland owners can save time getting to grips with processes like registering your land with the Rural Payments Agency, mapping, form filling and stakeholder consultation.
